Time
Jane Barbe passed away on July 18, 2003. But it wasn't until AT&T announced in September of this year that they discontinued "time" that Barbe really left the consciousness of America. Most commonly known as the "Time Lady," Barbe was the voice at the end of the "POP-CORN" line. Or, as I used to dial when I was a kid, "POP-SHIT." I have to say that the discontinuation of "time" left me feeling confused, sad and alone. When the time changed earlier this month, I checked my cell phone, my computer, but didn't feel satisfied that I had it right. So, as any blue blooded American would do, I reached for the phone and called time. But it wasn't there. Instead of the comforting voice of Barbe, a snooty, nasally voice said, (after the three boop boop boops, that normally preceded the soft voice I had grown accustomed to,) "effective September 19 2007, the time announcement information service has been discontinued." Does nothing last?
